As a middle schooler, Luis Brooks failed math and barely passed English. Two years into the MATCH Charter School here in Brighton, his MCAS scores have jumped about 30 points, well into the proficient range, and getting here hasn't been easy.
"I live in Dorchester, it takes me like an hour and 30 minutes to get here."
"That's a big sacrifice," counters Twomey.
"Yeah it is, but it's worth it," says Brooks.
With the state releasing its MCAS scores today, the MATCH School has plenty to celebrate. Ninety-seven percent of its student body scored proficient or advanced in math. Executive Director Alan Safran says these are kids selected by lottery from Boston schools, and that's a lesson to everyone.
"The model is simple though. Small school, build relationships, ask a lot of kids, hold kids to high standards."
