A Plus Student: MATCH High's Rondel Corlette

WCVB Boston

March 24 , 2005

NewsCenter 5

BOSTON -- Each week, NewsCenter 5 presents a high school senior who has taken the lessons of the classroom and applied them to life.

This week's A Plus student is MATCH High School's Rondel Corlette.

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that Corlette was failing high school until he got his hands on a lacrosse stick and a tough work ethic.

"Lacrosse was the first sport I played, I was good at and that I could compete at," said Corlette.

Corlette is a senior at Boston's MATCH school, a public charter school near Boston University. Corlette nearly flunked out of school freshman year. But hard work and lacrosse turned it around after a summer of classes.

"The next school year after going to summer school, I just kicked into high gear. I went to the library every day. It started out just going to lacrosse games until I found out I can do this, and then it was more having the drive than knowing how to do the work," he said.

Once he found out he could do the work, Rondel excelled. The MATCH school focuses on college preparation. Corlette could have left for an easier high school, but he stuck with it.

Corlette is even taking cultural anthropology at Boston University with older students, and spends hours studying at the Boston Public Library.

"One of the reasons he's successful is because of the enormous effort he puts in. He is intellectually curious, " said Corlette's teacher, Bob Hill.

Corlette has been so successful in lacrosse, he has already moved from the student program to adult leagues. He also coaches younger lacrosse players.
