Our building is located at 1001 Commonwealth Avenue, on the edge of Boston and Brighton, near Boston University. Originally built in 1918 as the New England headquarters for Lincoln Automobiles, the building boasts a palatial central staircase, and a high-ceilinged hall decorated with neo-Egyptian columns with flaring crowns that used to serve as the automobile showroom.
In 1940, Lincoln moved out, and the location went through various incarnations before Ellis the Rim Man, now a neighborhood legend, moved into the building in 1961. Using a massive billboard sign erected atop the three-story building to advertise the auto-parts store, Ellis the Rim Man occupied the building for 40 years before the MATCH School moved in. The billboard sign was visible from the Mass Pike, and served as a neighborhood landmark and institution for 4 decades before being removed in 2002.
Since moving into the building in 2002, the MATCH School has performed a number of renovations, including turning the third floor of the school, formerly the repair shop for Ellis, into a dormitory for the MATCH Corps tutors, and installing solar panels on the roof of the building to reduce energy costs and pollution. The building in its current form boasts large windows allowing plenty of natural light, high ceilings, and a warm, safe environment for our students.
The MATCH School building was featured in the book Architecture for Achievement Building Patterns for Small School Learning for its innovative design and use of space.
