Lakeisha St. Joy

MATCH Class of 2011

Attending Boston College

Sociology Major

Interview with Lakeisha

Congratulations on your graduation! Where are you headed now, and what will you be studying?

I'm headed to BC (Boston College). Right now, I'm planning on studying sociology, but I also want to try and explore anthropology and international development. I'm interested in international development because I want to travel to 3rd world countries, and you know, go into those random little areas and try to help people find a voice.

What are you most looking forward to about college?

I am most looking forward to meeting new people, and all the extracurricular stuff that I'm going to be able to do in my spare time.

What sort of extracurricular activities are you looking to get involved with?

DANCE! Also, I'm looking forward to doing some leadership work with the AHANA Leadership Council (AHANA stands for African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American) and other groups on campus.

What will you miss most about MATCH?

If I had to say one thing, it would be my friends. The best thing about MATCH is how small it is. You get a chance to know everybody. When I go to college, not everybody is going to know me as well as they did at MATCH.

Who from MATCH had the greatest impact on you and why?

I would say Ms. Thompson (High School English teacher). She really, really pushed me. Sometimes, she would give us so much work, I was sure I'd never be able to do it. I never thought I'd be able to write so many essays and read so many books in such a short amount of time – I did it all. Also, she really knows how to explore books, especially book she likes. She's the type of teacher that even if you feel like you're doing a lot, you feel like you OWE it to her. She just has this presence, and it's a good one too.

If you could give one piece of advice to current MATCH students what would it be?

ALWAYS do the work, even when you don't feel like doing it. If you try it at least once, there is always an opportunity to look at it again after it was graded. It's worth it, so yeah, always do the work.

How do you feel that MATCH has helped prepare you for the upcoming year?

I have a lot of confidence in myself because I finished MATCH. Being able to take BU college classes helped me feel prepared. I already know what to expect from college, especially when it comes to lecture, such as taking notes and studying for a college exam. I feel ready!

Great! Is there anything else you would like to add?

BC is awesome and dominates! Also, there's no stopping Lakeisha St. Joy!!
